The First Step Toward “I Do”: Why I Love the Notice of Intended Marriage Meeting

As a celebrant, I’m lucky enough to witness some of the most joyful, emotional, and unforgettable moments in people’s lives. But one of my favourite moments actually happens well before the ceremony, the vows, or the big entrance down the aisle.

It happens when a couple sits down with me to sign their Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM) - the very first official step in their wedding journey.

At first glance, it might just seem like paperwork. A form to fill in. A legal requirement to tick off the list. But in truth? It’s so much more than that.

A Front-Row Seat to Love

These meetings give me a front-row seat to the personalities, stories, and beautiful quirks that make each couple unique.

There are shy glances exchanged across the table. Laughter over how they met. Sweet details about the proposal. Occasionally, a four-legged friend tags along for moral support (and usually steals the show). Every couple is different - and every meeting feels like a tiny celebration in itself.

Some couples arrive with spreadsheets, timelines, and colour-coded folders. Others walk in with nothing but a heart full of spontaneity. And honestly? I love both just the same.

More Than Just a Legal Step

What makes this moment so special is that it often becomes much more than a form-filling session. It’s a chance to start dreaming out loud - to chat about ceremony styles, spark ideas for vows, or gently ease any nerves.

We talk, we laugh, sometimes we cry (happy tears, of course), and we build the foundation for a ceremony that will feel genuinely them. It’s a moment to connect, to reassure, and to let the excitement really start to sink in.

The Magic of a Signature

The act of signing the NOIM is a simple one - but it’s filled with anticipation and promise. It's the moment everything becomes real. The countdown officially begins, and the “we’re getting married!” grin is often impossible to hide.

As a celebrant, being invited into that moment is a true privilege. It reminds me, every time, why I love this work so much.

Because that signature? It’s not just ink on paper.

It’s the first step toward forever.

And for me, that’s pure magic.

Planning your wedding? Ready to take that first official step?

Let’s chat about how we can make every part of your journey - from the NOIM to the aisle - feel completely you.
