Sometimes Simple
Is Just Perfect

Legals Only Wedding Ceremonies
Make It Official, Your Way

Not every couple dreams of a big wedding.

For some, making your marriage official is all that matters. Whether you're planning a celebration later, heading overseas for a destination wedding, or simply prefer to keep things private, choosing a legals only wedding is every bit as valid as a traditional ceremony.

I'm Jill Keen, a registered marriage celebrant based on the Tweed Coast, and I help couples make it official with a simple, relaxed and meaningful legal ceremony. No fuss. No pressure. Just the legal requirements, handled with care, warmth and professionalism.

What Is a Legals Only Wedding?

A legals only wedding is exactly what it sounds like. It covers everything required for you to be legally married in Australia, without the planning and personalisation of a full ceremony.

For many couples, it's the perfect option. You still get married. You still have a meaningful moment together.

You simply choose to keep things beautifully uncomplicated

What Actually Has to Happen for a Legal Australian Marriage?

Australian law requires just a few things for your marriage to be legal:

  • A registered marriage celebrant.

  • A completed Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM), lodged at least one month before your wedding date.

  • Two witnesses who are over 18 years of age.

  • The legal wording (known as the Monitum) to be read during the ceremony.

  • The required legal declarations and signing of your marriage documents.

That's it.

I'll guide you through each step, making sure everythingis completed correctly so you can relax and enjoythe moment.

What You Don’t Need

One of the best things about a legals only ceremony is that there are very few rules beyond the legal requirements.

You don't need:

  • A formal venue.

  • A bridal party.

  • A guest list.

  • Personal vows.

  • Wedding rings.

  • A long ceremony.

If your dream wedding is simply the two of you, your witnesses and a quiet moment to make it official, that's more than enough.

How It Differs from an Elopement

While both options are intimate, they serve different purposes.

A Legals Only ceremony focuses purely on completing the legal requirements for marriage.

An elopement includes a thoughtfully crafted ceremony experience, personalised to your story, often in a beautiful location with your own vows and meaningful moments woven throughout.

If you're looking for something a little more personal while still keeping it intimate, my Elopements service may be the perfect fit.

What to Expect on the Day

Keeping things simple doesn't mean feeling rushed or impersonal.

My role is to make the experience calm, straightforward and enjoyable from beginning to end.

The Ceremony Itself

A legals only ceremony typically takes around 10 to 15 minutes.

We'll complete the required legal wording, sign your marriage documents and officially celebrate the moment you've become husband and wife, wife and wife, or husband and husband.

It's relaxed, meaningful and completely stress free.

All you'll need are your two witnesses and each other.

Where Can It Happen?

One of the lovely things about a legals only wedding is its flexibility.

Depending on your preferences, we can complete your ceremony:

  • At my location

  • At your home

  • In a local park

  • On the beach

Somewhere that's meaningful to the two of you

If you have a location in mind, let's chat about making it work.
